Apple iPhone 17e, 256GB — Best Overall for Most Students
Price: $589.99
Buy the Apple iPhone 17e, 256GB, Soft Pink on Amazon
The iPhone 17e is the most balanced option in this student-focused lineup. Apple’s current specifications confirm a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, A19 chip, 256GB or 512GB storage, IP68 water and dust resistance, USB-C and MagSafe charging. Apple’s iPhone 17e specifications also confirm a 48MP Fusion camera with a 12MP 2x telephoto function, making the phone more versatile than its single visible rear-lens design suggests.
The Amazon listing being evaluated is the 256GB Soft Pink unlocked renewed model A3577. Its $589.99 price places it below the price of many new flagship iPhones while retaining current-generation hardware. The listing also identifies a 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
For students, the 256GB starting capacity is one of the biggest advantages. It gives more room for lecture recordings, photos, videos, applications, games and downloaded files than the 128GB models lower in this list. The A19 chip also gives the phone considerably newer hardware than the iPhone 15, iPhone 14 and iPhone 13.
The compromise is camera flexibility. The iPhone 17e does not have a dedicated Ultra Wide camera, so students who frequently photograph large groups, classrooms or wide campus scenes may prefer the iPhone 15.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 256GB storage | No dedicated Ultra Wide camera |
| A19 chip | Renewed condition rather than new |
| 6.1-inch OLED display | Current listing price can change |
| MagSafe and USB-C | |
| IP68 protection |
Who should buy it: Students who want the newest hardware in this group and enough storage to keep the phone for several years.
Who should skip it: Students whose priority is the lowest possible purchase price or who specifically need an Ultra Wide camera.

Apple iPhone 16e, 128GB — Best for Apple Intelligence on a Lower Budget
Price: $382.22
Buy the Apple iPhone 16e, 128GB, Black on Amazon
The iPhone 16e gives students a large portion of the modern iPhone experience for substantially less than the 17e in this particular renewed lineup. Apple’s specifications identify the A18 chip, Apple Intelligence support, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and a 48MP Fusion camera that provides a 12MP 2x telephoto function. Apple’s iPhone 16e technical specifications confirm those core features.
This Amazon model is the 128GB Black unlocked renewed iPhone 16e. The listing price is $382.22 and identifies model A3212. Its renewed return terms should be checked on the live Amazon listing before purchase.
The A18 processor and Apple Intelligence support give this phone a clear advantage over the older iPhone 15, 14 and 13 when future-facing software features are important. The 48MP Fusion camera also gives it useful 2x shooting capability without requiring a separate telephoto lens.
Storage is the main compromise compared with the 17e. The model here has 128GB, so students who keep lots of videos, games, photos and offline course files should consider whether that capacity will be sufficient.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A18 chip | Only 128GB in this listing |
| Apple Intelligence support | No dedicated Ultra Wide camera |
| 6.1-inch OLED display | Renewed condition |
| 48MP Fusion camera |
Who should buy it: Students who want recent hardware and Apple Intelligence while spending less than the iPhone 17e.
Who should skip it: Heavy storage users who can afford the 256GB iPhone 17e.

Apple iPhone 15, 128GB — Best for Camera Versatility
Price: $415.00
Buy the Apple iPhone 15, 128GB, Black on Amazon
The iPhone 15 is the camera-focused alternative in this group. Apple’s technical specifications list an A16 Bionic chip and a dual-camera system consisting of a 48MP Main camera and 12MP Ultra Wide camera. Apple’s iPhone 15 specifications also confirm 2x optical-quality telephoto functionality, Night mode, Smart HDR 5 and sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
The Amazon listing is the 128GB Black unlocked renewed iPhone 15, model MTLV3LL/A, priced at $415. It carries a 90-day Amazon Renewed Warranty according to the listing information.
For a student, the Ultra Wide camera is the key differentiator. It is useful for group photographs, wider classroom scenes, buildings, travel and situations where moving farther away is not practical. The iPhone 15 also uses USB-C, which makes it easier to share charging accessories with many newer devices.
The downside is that it uses the older A16 Bionic platform rather than the A18 or A19 found in the newer e-series models here. It also starts with 128GB in this particular listing.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 48MP Main camera | Older than the 16e and 17e |
| Dedicated Ultra Wide camera | 128GB storage |
| A16 Bionic | Renewed condition |
| USB-C | |
| Dynamic Island |
Who should buy it: Students who care about camera flexibility and want both Main and Ultra Wide cameras.
Who should skip it: Students who prioritize the newest processor and Apple Intelligence over camera versatility.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB — Best for a Lower-Cost OLED iPhone
Price: $300.00
Buy the Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight on Amazon
The iPhone 14 is where the price falls into a noticeably lower tier in this lineup. The renewed 128GB Midnight unlocked model is listed at $300, making it a useful option for students who want an OLED iPhone without spending more than necessary.
Apple lists the iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, A15 Bionic chip, IP68 resistance and a dual 12MP camera system. The camera combination includes Main and Ultra Wide lenses, giving it broader photographic coverage than the iPhone 16e and 17e. Apple’s iPhone 14 specifications confirm these features.
The Amazon listing identifies the device as unlocked and compatible with multiple carrier networks, although buyers should still confirm compatibility with their own carrier before ordering. The listing also states that headphones and a SIM card are not included and that the phone comes with a generic MFi-certified charging accessory.
The major compromise is age. The iPhone 14 uses A15 Bionic and does not support Apple Intelligence. Students who want the newest AI features should move to the 16e or 17e instead.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| $300 renewed listing price | Older A15 platform |
| 6.1-inch OLED display | No Apple Intelligence support |
| Dual-camera system | Renewed condition |
| IP68 resistance |
Who should buy it: Students who want a 6.1-inch OLED iPhone and dual cameras at a lower price.
Who should skip it: Students who specifically want Apple Intelligence or newer-generation hardware.

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB — Best for Used-Market Value
Price: $262.00
Buy the Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight on Amazon
The iPhone 13 is the value-focused choice for students who are comfortable buying a considerably older iPhone. This renewed 128GB Midnight unlocked model is listed at $262, with the listing showing a previous price of $275.47 and a 1-year Amazon Renewed warranty.
Apple’s specifications confirm the iPhone 13 uses the A15 Bionic chip, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and a dual 12MP Main and Ultra Wide camera system. Apple’s iPhone 13 technical specifications confirm sensor-shift optical image stabilization, Night mode and 4K Dolby Vision video recording.
The camera setup makes the iPhone 13 more flexible than the SE 3, while the OLED display is considerably better suited to long reading, streaming and browsing sessions than the SE’s 4.7-inch LCD panel.
The trade-off is age. Students buying an iPhone 13 in 2026 should pay close attention to battery condition and physical condition. The 128GB capacity can also become restrictive for students who store lots of video locally.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| $262 renewed listing price | Older generation |
| 6.1-inch OLED display | 128GB storage |
| Dual cameras | Battery condition matters |
| A15 Bionic | No Apple Intelligence |
Who should buy it: Students who want an OLED iPhone with dual cameras while keeping spending lower.
Who should skip it: Students who want Apple Intelligence, newer hardware or more storage headroom.

Apple iPhone SE 3rd Gen, 64GB — Best for Students Who Want a Small iPhone
Price: $124.49
Buy the Apple iPhone SE 3rd Gen, 64GB, Midnight on Amazon
The iPhone SE 3 is the specialist choice for students who want the smallest phone possible or simply need the lowest purchase price in this six-phone selection. The renewed 64GB Midnight unlocked listing is priced at $124.49, making it dramatically cheaper than the other options here.
Apple’s specifications confirm a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display, A15 Bionic chip, 64GB/128GB/256GB storage options, Touch ID and a 12MP Main camera. Apple’s iPhone SE 3 specifications also list a 144-gram weight and IP67 water and dust resistance.
The small size can be an advantage for students who prefer one-handed operation and easy pocket carry. The A15 Bionic also gives the SE 3 considerably more processing capability than its compact body might suggest.
But the $124.49 price comes with significant compromises. This particular listing has only 64GB of storage, the display is much smaller than every other phone in the main lineup, the rear camera is single-lens and the phone uses the older Lightning connector.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| $124.49 listing price | Only 64GB in this listing |
| Very compact 4.7-inch design | Small LCD display |
| A15 Bionic | Single rear camera |
| Touch ID | Lightning connector |
| 5G support | Older design |
Who should buy it: Students who want a compact iPhone or have an extremely tight budget.
Who should skip it: Students who need lots of storage, a large display, USB-C or a more flexible camera system.

How to Choose a Budget-Friendly iPhone for Students
The biggest decision is whether you want newer hardware or the lowest purchase price. The renewed iPhone 17e costs $589.99 in this selection but gives you A19 performance and 256GB storage. The iPhone 16e drops to $382.22 while retaining an A18 chip and Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 15 sits at $415 and offers a more flexible camera system.
If your budget is around $300, the renewed iPhone 14 at $300 is the middle ground. It gives you a 6.1-inch OLED display and dual cameras, although its A15 platform does not support Apple Intelligence.
At $262, the iPhone 13 is a cheaper way to get a 6.1-inch OLED iPhone with dual cameras. It is a particularly relevant option for students who care about the basic iPhone experience more than having the newest processor.
The iPhone SE 3 is completely different. At $124.49, it is by far the cheapest option here, but its 64GB capacity, 4.7-inch LCD display and single rear camera make it a specialized choice. Students who spend hours reading PDFs, watching lectures or keeping large files on the phone will generally benefit from the larger 6.1-inch models.

- Check the model: Make sure the exact generation and storage capacity match the listing you intend to buy.
- Check carrier compatibility: An unlocked phone should still be compatible with the cellular bands and SIM/eSIM requirements of your carrier.

- Check warranty and returns: Read the current Amazon listing carefully before purchase because coverage differs between these listings.
Why the iPhone 17e Leads This Student Comparison
The iPhone 17e earns the single Best Overall position because its combination of current-generation hardware and 256GB storage addresses two of the biggest long-term concerns for students: performance and storage capacity. Apple’s current specifications confirm the A19 chip, 256GB starting capacity, 6.1-inch OLED display, USB-C and MagSafe. Apple’s official specifications provide the primary hardware reference.
However, the lower-priced phones are not interchangeable. The iPhone 16e is the more economical route to A18 and Apple Intelligence hardware. The iPhone 15 is the camera-flexibility choice. The iPhone 14 is the lower-cost 6.1-inch OLED option. The iPhone 13 focuses on used-market value, while the SE 3 is designed for buyers who prioritize compact size and the lowest purchase price.
Final Thought: Which iPhone Should a Student Buy?
The Apple iPhone 17e, 256GB is the Best Overall choice in this comparison because it combines the newest processor here with 256GB storage and modern charging features. The iPhone 16e is the lower-cost route to recent hardware, while the iPhone 15 makes more sense for students who value camera versatility.
If your budget is tighter, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 provide larger OLED displays and dual cameras at lower prices, while the iPhone SE 3 is the extreme-budget, compact option.
